About Kate MM

Designing has run in my family for generations. My grandmother attended fashion design school in New York in the 1950’s, and bought me my first sewing machine. My mother, a practicing jewelry designer, was always sketching and manipulating wire and sculptural elements into her art throughout my childhood. My inherited creativity has led me to pursue my passion of design, and I have now been professionally designing in the New York Fashion industry for two years. Having worked for design groups such as rag & bone, Pivot Apparel, and Minnie Rose, I have a diversified background in women’s wovens, knitwear, and sweaters.

With an additional 8 years of fashion internships and styling experience ranging from working with Kleinfeld’s Bridal, Jenny Yoo, assisting wardrobe for NYFW Longchamp and Revolve shows, dressing for Altered Men’s Paris fashion week show, working wardrobe production on multiple Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows, and in-studio assisting the BLONDS, my experience is a culmination of different aesthetics and customer bases that have allowed me to develop my own unique design instincts.

Today, I am a full time womens knitwear designer based in New York, simultaneously designing and constructing Kate MM pieces intended to dazzle on stage or stun the dance floor. I strive to make pieces that are dripping in detail and self expression, with an element of camp and glam that is guaranteed to turn heads. The name “KATE DOUBLE MM” was coined by my dad. It was a suggestion that paid tribute to the line of creative women who have inspired me in my life, while also sounding like a Montana cattle ranch. Having a little cowgirl western flair to the name really sold me on it — and that is what led to the brand name.

Just as in the origin behind the creation of the brand name, what has inspired my designing throughout my life has been my connections to those I love. I grew up western horseback riding with my parents in the desert of Arizona, a hobby my dad and I continue to share to this day. Cowgirl culture, especially as it has evolved in fashion and entertainment today into a campy and femme-empowering concept has spoken to my creativity in such an immense way. Linking that with the dazzle of a burlesque or Vegas showgirl costume is the essence behind my vision for the driving aesthetic behind the KATE MM brand.
